The Prisoner Escapes the Village

Patrick McgoohanLooks like the Prisoner has finally escaped the village. Patrick McGoohan died today at the age of 80. Could you imagine how different we would perceive 007 if Patrick hadn’t turned the role down. Instead, we got Sean, and Patrick gave us one of the greatest, and most thought provoking show in television history, The Prisoner.

McGoohan’s death, also means that there will be no cameo by Number 6 in the new Prisoner mini-series.  McGoohan was more than just an actor on the show, it was his brain child.  He produced, directed, started and gave creative input on all the stories.  At a time when studios controlled every aspect of a TV show, Patrick convinced them to take a chance on a show where the hero loses every week.

I am not a Number

Prisoner

In preparation for the upcoming Prisoner mini-series, AMC has released an updated Prisoner site, complete with production shots, and full episodes (viewable online).  This is your chance to watch the entire cult-classic series, though the alternate version of “Chimes of Big Ben” is not available.  The site also now includes lots of discussion, fan takes, and explanations of each episode.  If you’ve always wanted to find out what the Prisoner is all about, go watch for yourself, and make your own conclusions.

Be seeing you.

The Prisoner - Kirby Style

I recently got a new Jack Kirby collector, and was thumbing through it.  The Kirby collector is pure eye candy, and I find myself rarely reading the interviews.  I’m just to engrossed in the master’s artwork.  There was an interview with Gil Kane near the end of the collection, and I saw the words, The Prisoner.  I knew Kane had worked on a Prisoner comic, but flipping to the next page, I discovered that the King had also worked on an adaptation of The Prisoner in the 70s.

After a quick search, here’s the collection of remaining art from Kirby’s take on this cult classic.  It’s simply stunning.
